The mission of the Northeast CO Alliance is to understand causes of carbon monoxide exposure and prevent future injuries and death.
Carbon Monoxide Risks
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas you cannot see, taste, or smell. It is often called “the invisible danger” because it requires a device to detect. It is created when fossil fuels such as kerosene, gasoline, coal, natural gas, propane, methane, or wood don’t burn completely. CO gas can be fatal to people and pets, and chronic low-level exposure can cause serious health complications.
Our Story
The Alliance for Prevention of Carbon Monoxide Incidents (CO Alliance) was founded in 2015 by Norman Miller, PhD, after his near‑miss carbon monoxide incident with three other partners. Over the years, it has evolved with its members and partners to become the Northeast CO Alliance.
The grassroots effort brings together fire safety officials, public health professionals, medical experts, researchers, CO survivors and families, and partners across state, national, and international levels. It aims to collaborate broadly to reduce carbon monoxide injuries and fatalities, and hosts an annual summit for training and networking.
Annual CO Safety Summits
Each year the Northeast CO Alliance hosts a gathering of safety and healthcare professionals, advocates, and community partners committed to preventing carbon monoxide incidents. This event combines trainings from leaders in the field with opportunities for networking. The conversations and action steps from each summit guide NECOA's planning for the year ahead.
In November 2026, the 11th Annual Carbon Monoxide Safety Summit returns to a two-day event!
